"Foote (Sketches of North Carolin, Historical and Biographical Illustrative of the Principles of a portion of her early settlers, by Rev. William Henry Foote, 1846, p. 197) relates that, among Presbyterian emigrations from Scotland to Ireland, to escape persecution for conscience's sake, during the period between 1610 and 1688, there were seven brothers bearing the same name of Alexander.
But their grievances increasing a few years preceding the Revolution of 1688, their ministers imprisoned for holding fasts, the Alexanders resolved to seek quiet and repose in the New World. On the eve of their departure, they sent to Scotland for their old preacher to baptize their children and administer to them the consolations of the Gospel. The faithful and fearless preacher arrived in time to meet the friends on the vessel on which they had embarked, and there held becoming religious services. . . Before morning the minister was on board and the vessel had proceeded on its voyage. The minister having no family, cheerfully consented to the arrangement, and with joy and thanksgiving they landed safely on Manhattan. . . the others took up their abode for a time in New Jersey; then settled in part, perhaps, in Cecil County, Maryland, and others in Pennsylvania. There they mingled with their countrymen, intermarried, and their descendants in great numbers migrated to the Catawba country, following the great valley of Virginia from Pennsylvania and Maryland. . ." "Mary P. Spencer, 126 Blunt Street, Water Valley, Mississippi, who died in 1994, furnished genealogical data in 1978 to our cousin Ann House. Ms. Spencer attributed the source of her data on Alexander to the 'Family Notes of Mr. Newton Alexander Nisbet of Wildwood, Florida.'
"Mary Margaret Dobbs Ward corresponded with Mr. Nisbet beginning in March 1968. We have several letters that Nisbet sent to her, in two of which he relates the following background:
Newton Alexander Nisbet, Box 485, Wildwood, Florida 32785, March 19, 1968,
Dear Mrs. Ward,
Mrs. L.G. March of Monre, NC, writes me that you are a descendnat of Zebulon Alexander. . . I have undertaken the impossible taks of getting the genealogy of all the seven sons and two daughters of the above Rev. James Alexander of Marlyan. . .
"Mr. Nisbet traced the Alexanders from The Rev. James Alexander of Scotland.

"The name Alexander is Greek in origin, being taken fro the words alexo, meaning "to help or defend" and aner, meaning "man." Thus, its meaning is said to be "helper of man." Alexanders are said to descend from Somerled, an early Scot of Viking ancestry, pominent in the twelfth century. Somerled was the grandfather of Donald, Lord of the Isles. Alexander MacDonald, second son of Donald, had two sons who adopted the Christian name of their father as their surname and it is said that numerous clans of Alexanders descend from this ancient clan of MacDonald. The chiefs of these clans are said to have resided in the south of Scotland.
In 1609, after the accession of James VI of Scotland to the throne of England as James I, there was a move underway to repopulate the north of Ireland, called Ulster Plantation, with Scotch and English protestants. It was thoguth that these peoples might be easier to govern than the Catholic Irish. The Scotch came in large numbers and settled in Ulster. Most of them were Presbyterians.
Differences arose between these Presbyterian Scots and the Irish Catholics, differences in customs as well as religion. Later troubles witht he English over trade restrictions, as awell as religious beliefs, casued great numbers of these people to migrate to the American colonies. Among those immigrants were a number of Alexanders. They settled in Somerset and Cecil Counties, Maryland, as well as ont he Eastern Shore of Virginia, and adjoining lands in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
The Colonial Records of both Maryland and Virginia clearly prove that there were members of the Alexander family in these colonies well before 1700. Just how early they came, and the exact circumstances of their arrival is not known. . . " - This information came from Alexander Kin, by Charles C. & Virginia W. Alexander.
