[NI8] Death Certificate #3986

[HI8] (Research):A search in the 1880 United States Census turns up an 18 year-old Prussian born "John Dor" living with the family of Adam Miller in Manhattan, New York at the time. He is listed as single, and his profession is given as an ink maker. Aside from the matching birthyear and birthplace, there is no evidence that John Dor is in fact Johann Dominik Dorr.

[NI9] Multnomah County Death Certificate #2007, name given as "Nellie Door"

[HI9] (Research):The 1910 and 1920 census' imply that Nellie was born in 1872, but the 1930 census implies a birth year of 1878. Further, the 1930 census states that she was 14 when she was first married to Flavin, indicating a marriage in 1892, roughly 2 years after the birth of Martin Flavin. Written family history has always had Nellie born in 1878, so were the '10 and '20 census ages a lie, so that she would appear to be 18 instead of 12 at the time of Martin's birth, or is the 1930 census inaccurate? An 1880 or, sadly, an 1890 census record would be a huge help.

Discovery of the marriage notice to Patrick Flavin in an 1889 issue of the Leadville Daily/Evening Chronicle leads me to believe the birth year of 1872 is the more accurate one, as that would have made her 17 instead of 11 at the time. Something tells me that even in 1889, getting married to an 11 year old is not something you put in a newspaper. The 1930 Census must be wrong.

9/28/2016 - Located birth record in Vermont vital records. Date given is 20 Mar 1872. Accepting this as the correct birth date as it was recorded closer to the event.

6/19/2017 - Located in 1880 Census with her mother and all her siblings in the household of John M Williams, Jefferson Co, Colorado.

[HI10] (Research):Data in the Minnesota Cemetery Inscription Index gives his birth year as 1891, as does his WWI Draft Registration card.

[MI21] (Medical):Obituaries: Arlene Hagerup
Teacher, 81
Arlene Hagerup, 81, of Astoria, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in Astoria.

She was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Astoria, to Arvid and Lavonia Larson.

Raised in Astoria, she graduated from Astoria High School. She attended the University of Oregon for two years and then transferred to Oregon College of Education, where she obtained her teaching degree. She was an avid student and learner, and was salutatorian of her high school class. She didn't miss a day of school either in high school or college.

On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Robert Hagerup in Astoria. He preceded her in death in 1968. The couple were sweethearts since she was a seventh grader at Astor School and he was an eighth grader at Lewis and Clark Central School.

Mrs. Hagerup started her teaching career in Forest Grove. She then moved back to Astoria where she taught elementary school at Lewis and Clark Central School and Astor School until her retirement.

Family members said both her husband and her best friend, Larene Olson, have credited her with helping them make it through college. In addition to her love of reading and learning, she loved gardening, clam digging, jig saw puzzles and politics.

She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Roberta and Gary Muehlberg of Astoria, Susan Hagerup of Ilwaco Wash., and Tamara Hagerup of Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Jennifer Hagerup of Portland; and five grandchildren, Cyrus Heick of Corvallis, John Heick of Astoria, and Bobby and Karina Hagerup and Addison Jensen, all of Portland.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Hagerup, in 1959.

A funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31 at Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries.

Interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Clatsop County Animal Shelter or Lower Columbia Hospice, in care of Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries, 576 12th St., Astoria, OR 97103.

------------

Birthplace listed in 1920 census is illegible, but looks like it says Scotland. 1930 US Census also claims Scotland as birthplace.
------------
The 1880 Census Mortality Schedule contains record of a Martin Spellman, born in Ireland, dying in Aug 1880 at the age of 87 in Bradford, VT. Maybe his father?
------------
1890-92 Leadville, CO city directory contains a Martin Spelman, policeman, city dump, r. Poplar, nr. 18th. Same home location in 1890 as an individual named Patrick Flavin, who married Nellie Spellman in 1889 in Leadville. So far, just a coincidence.

"The Read family originated in the Highlands of Scotland and was among those who, following the accession of James I to the throne of England, early in the 17th century, participated in the Scotch occupation of North Ireland. Records indicate that the ancestors of the Read family of Clearfield County settled in the County of Armagh, Ireland during that time period, alter moving to Dublin. About 1740 this branch of the family emigrated to Cecil County, Maryland, occupying a portion of the tract known as "New Munster", near the bounders of Chester County, Pennsylvania and New Castle County, Delaware. This was the center of a larg Scotch-Irish colony, to which origin of many prominent American families can be traced, including the Alexanders, who were large land owners as early as 1714." - Source: Erie B. Quote from ALEXANDER KIN: "We know from the records that WALLACE had been living in Somerset County. It is likely that he led a company of relatives into Cecil County to settle on the New Munter land. Matthew Wallace gave his power of attorney to his 'truly and well beloved kinsman William Alexander, Jr. of Somerset Co.' to sell his land in Somerset, in the year 1707. By this we may judge that this group moved to Cecil County prior to 1707." - Information sent to the author by Silas McCaslin on September 29, 1999. Pages 169-197 are excerpted into this database. [HI92] (Research):Information found at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=crayhton suggests that the Wallace family line can be traced from this point back to 12th century England, and even has connections to the British Monarchy through marriage to the Crawford family. I chose not to include that possible ancestry beyond this point, as I consider it to be highly speculative and difficult, if not impossible, to verify.
